Its all gone wrong, and i dont understand!! « Thread Started on Nov 5, 2009, 4:17pm »
i got on Jaque yesterday and it all went wrong. His routine was the same as always, i long lined him for 15 minutes, then called Pauline down to help me ride. I got on him the same as always and statred the session with Pauline on the line, we started walking and all of a sudden Jaque did a massive buck then a hump and turned to go the opposite direction. I fell off and broke my elbow!! the weird thing is that he showed no signs of anxiety or pain because i can pick up the signs easily, he has shown them before so we just took it easy for a few minutes then continued, yesterday nothing!!!! he was relaxed and calm, then had a huge explosion!! we took off his saddle and checked under it but nothing was there!! i dont understand what went wrong, we were in the easy part of the session that he had done hundreds of times!!!
now im out of action for 4 weeks as i have to keep my arm in a sling!!!!im starting to get the feelin he doesnt trust me!!!!!
rant over, i will continue to be bored in my house with a broken elbow and a sad face for the next 4 weeks!!!!!
anyone want a 16.2 tb x, coloured??????????? just joking, i still love him but i think Pauline is more upset about my injury than i am!!!!!! im just annoyed jaque will be off for 4 weeks and i will have to start over!!!!!!!

I'm afraid more knowledgeable people than I will have to offer the advice but I can offer tea and sympathy. I broke my elbow falling off a horse and I remember how it felt.

Sarah, Keith is threatening to go and dig holes in the sand in a "bottom shape", although I suggested we need to pile up heaps of mattresses and wrap you in bubble wrap!
On a more serious note however, I think I AM more upset about it than you are, I dont like you having accidents and I am seriously wondering whether it is wise to continue with Jacque. I know, I know, you feel differently, but it worries me immensely when he behaves in this fashion, as you are the daft whatsit that gets hurt! Methinks I will ban you from riding anything bigger than a Shetland just in case .... hmm mind you dont think you would be much safer on Molly !
I am still puzzling about what on earth happened to cause such an explosion. As Sarah says in her post, nothing was different, the weather was calm, just the usual amount of ducks about - no sheep or goats appearing suddenly over the bank - nothing obvious at all. Jacque had progressed to being ridden off lead with me just standing in the middle, and on each occasion we start the same way, moving on from a few circles on lead, allowing the circles to get bigger, then quietly unclipping. On this occasion we hadnt reached the unclipping stage, as Sarah says, it was an easy part for him - something he has done on lots of occasions. He showed no signs that anything was bothering him, looking perfectly relaxed and happy wandering along.
We shall look forward to seeing what suggestions everybody has to make, but at the moment my main concern of course is for Sarah's safety. (shut up Sarah!)

i dont understand why he reacted, but there must be a reason. maybe i put his saddle in the wrong position? next time i will just have to hold on tighter!!!!!!! there will be a next time!!!!!!!!! he was close and everyone is allowed to have an off day, he will get it one day, just need to start from the beginning again!!!!

Good heavens what an awful thing to happen Sarah - and while I admire your determination to carry on when your elbow heals, I do worry that maybe Jaques has a problem that may be bigger than the both of you .... could Steve visit and work with him to get an idea of what is going on with him? ((hug))

Sorry to hear about this Sarah and I hope you'll feel better soon.
Have you used a dummy on him? If it's one of those things that he's only going to do once in a blue moon it might be better to tie a dummy on him and keep using it until he has his next mad minute. That way you'll be free to deal with it rather than having to stop and check which bone is broken this time!
Has he done anything like this before? Has his turnout been restricted? It sounds very strange and you may have to wait weeks for a repeat performance but unless there's a clue to why he's done it it sounds as though it will happen again. xx

Oooooh! So very, very sorry for you Sarah. Pleased you're not disheartened by your ordeal and seem determined to carry on when well enough (one of the advantages of being young! ) I'm sure Pauline's shocked and upset by what happened. Wonder if a firework went off that he heard and you didn't? You'll never know I suppose...... Anyway, hope your elbow heals well and on the bright side, just think how many hours you'll be able to spend on here! x

Hi Sarah,
Sorry to read your news.
Hope you don't mind me making a few suggestions
If you have access to a video camera it might be a good idea to video his on going training (when you're fitting fit again). If nothing happens during a training session you could record over it, BUT if something does happen you'll be able to view it all again and might just spot what happened and for what reason.
If I remember right he used to buck before when you were using the dummy. I'd be tempted to stick the dummy on again and make sure it can't come off by accident and keep working him like that until he explodes again. My reasoning being that as far as I can remember each time he's bucked so far something has come off him and maybe he needs to learn that bucking isn't the answer if you get what I mean

Hi all,
thanks for the kind words, glad to say my elbow feels better now!!!! still in a sling for three weeks but the hardest part is not being neary ponies!!!! ok so i will try to answer everyones questions!! BJ - he is turned out all the time and is in the same field so nothing has changed in his turnout and i have used the dummy on him for a couple of months before i got on!! As far as i remember he never bucked with the dummy, only with a human rider. The dummy did come off a few times but while he was standing still so that he could get used to the feeling of things on his sides. the dummy was drapped over his back and dragged down on both sides.
Steve- i do like the idea of videoing his progress but unfortunatley i dont have a video camera, maybe i will ask santa to bring me one. I will go back to the dummy for a little while will be good for the monster and also for me as i suspect i am going to need to do some physio!!!!

Hmmm - is the dummy heavy enough Sarah and can you not figure out a way to have it sitting upright?
I'm surprised that no firm has marketed a dummy in a sitting position and of average human weight by now - now there's an idea for any budding entrepreneurs out there!

Hi Bj,
the dummy does sit upright, he is clipped onto the saddle by the stirrups and the D rings. I had Steve check the dummy last time he was up and he said that it was a normal weight for the dummies. Will just have to keep trying with the dummy until Jaque has another fit!!!
